LATEST UPDATE: The death toll in the pager explosions in Lebanon has
risen to 9, according to Lebanese media outlets.

UPDATE: Lebanon’s Health Minister reports that eight people have been
killed and 2,750 injured due to exploding pagers across the country, per
ABC News.

Over 1,000 individuals, mostly Hezbollah terrorists, were wounded when
the pagers they use for communication exploded across Lebanon on
Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Authorities are expecting that the number of victims will continue to rise.

The incident, confirmed by security sources, is being called the
“biggest security breach” the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror network
has faced since its ongoing war with Israel began.

The explosions, reported by Reuters, occurred at 3:45 p.m. local time.
Panic spread as Hezbollah-controlled areas in southern Beirut and other
parts of the country were hit with explosions that lasted for over an hour.

Security sources confirmed that the devices were the latest models used
by Hezbollah and were thought to be critical in their communications

I used to have pagers before cellphone became popular. I haven't seen
people carrying pagers for a long time. Maybe pagers still have a niche
market here because pager signals can penetrate huge buildings and deep
underground concourses.

You would punch in a return phone number when you call somebody's pager.
I used to pull a prank when somebody dialed a wrong phone number and
left a pager phone number in my voice mail. I would call the wrong
caller's pager and leave my callback phone number as, e.g.  911-4567
(that was long time ago before all phone numbers became 10-digit). The
first three digits would direct the caller to 911 if he was dumb enough
to dial that number.

You can rig a tiny circuit that would respond to a special sequence of
digits on the pager's display to send electric current to detonate a
small explosive charge inside the pager. A computer telemarketing
mass-calling programme can store a long list of pager phone numbers and
the corresponding detonation code. At the right time, the computer will
call those pagers via a telephone modem and transmit the detonation
codes in regular keypad touch-tones. All the pagers receiving the
corresponding detonation code will go kaboom.

About 25 years ago I worked on a pager interface that used TAP.

At that time it was a landline modem connection to the paging company.
They would then transmit the message to the users via an RF connection
usually in a VHF band. People could be paged manually but it was mostly
automated. Specific incident codes and/or locations woud trigger the
program to look up a list of people to be paged.

Over the years the interface was expanded to send email or SMS via a
gateway but some agencies retained the old systems although internet
connections replaced modems. The message delivery can be more reliable.

Towards the end of the modem days it became hard to find modems. Many of
the paging companies were still using 2400 baud and the shiny new 56k
modems wouldn't go that low.

It reminded me of the suxtnet virus that the Mossad put on thumb drives
to deliver malware into computers that governed the speed on the
centrifuges in Iran that were used in the uranium enrichment process for
their nuclear bomb program. By making the centrifuges spin at the wrong
RPM they ruined the process.

There was another Mossad assassination where a cell phone exploded and

and wrote that Hezbollah had primarily obtained the AP924 model of Gold
Apollo's pagers, though it bought another three models.

The outlet further reported that two officials said Israeli forces had
planted small amounts of explosive material — as little as one or two
ounces — next to the pagers' batteries with remote switches.

But Gold Apollo's founder, Hsu Ching-Kuang, told reporters on Wednesday
that his company did not make the exploded pagers.

Per Reuters, he said the devices were instead manufactured by a European
firm that had the right to use Gold Apollo's brand.

"The product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it," he
said, according to the outlet.

Hsu called the incident "very embarrassing," but said his company had
also been made a victim, per Reuters.

Reuters had earlier reported similar findings to The Times, citing an
unnamed senior Lebanese source who said that Hezbollah had ordered 5,000
beepers, including the AP924, from Gold Apollo.

The same source told the outlet that Mossad, Israel's intelligence
service, had planted a board inside the pagers that contained explosive
material and could remotely receive a detonation code. "

"It's very hard to detect it through any means. Even with any device or
scanner," the source said, per Reuters.

The outlet added that it had examined some of the exploding pagers and
said their design and stickers matched devices built by Gold Apollo.

Gold Apollo and the Israeli Defense Ministry did not immediately respond
to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Hezbollah and Lebanon have both blamed Israel for the exploding pagers,
though Tel Aviv has not claimed responsibility.

Pagers became a significant part of Hezbollah's communication network
earlier this year, when its leaders decided to use the devices out of
concern that its cellphone network had been compromised.

A July report from Reuters citing multiple sources familiar with
Hezbollah said that the group had made the switch due to the loss of
several commanders amid hostilities with Israel.

The exploding pagers have led to heightened fears that Israel and
Hezbollah may escalate their conflict into a wide-scale or direct war.

Both have been conducting cross-border strikes against each other for
months in the wake of Hamas' October 7 attack and Israel's subsequent
deadly campaign in Gaza. The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of
residents on either side.

Before the pagers exploded on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu announced his administration's war goal of returning Israeli

The Counterterrorism Section of the National Security Division has
supervisory authority over 18 U.S.C. §§ 871 and 879 cases. As great
caution must be taken in matters relating to the security of the persons
protected by 18 U.S.C. § 871, United States Attorneys are encouraged to
consult with the Counterterrorism Section (CTS) of the National Security
Division when they have doubts on the prosecutive merit of a case. For
the same reason, dismissal of complaints under 18 U.S.C. § 871, when the
defendant is in custody under the Mental Incompetency Statutes (18
U.S.C. §§ 4244, 4246), requires approval from CTS. In other cases,
United States Attorneys must consult prior to dismissing a count
involving, or entering into any sentence commitment or other case
settlement involving a § 871 charge.

PHOENIX –David Michael Hanson, 41, of Phoenix, was arrested on Wednesday
for making online threats against the President and Vice-President.
Hanson was charged by Federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with five
counts of Threats Against the President and Successors to the Presidency
and five counts of Interstate Communication of Threats.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2023, while
living in Arizona, Hanson used a social media platform to post threats
to murder the President and Vice President of the United States. On
November 19, 2023, Hanson posted online a series of threatening
statements including one that stated, “#joeAndKamala I’m asking you to
resign on Monday your alternative is death brutally murdered.” After the
U.S. Secret Service spoke to Hanson and warned him that it was a Federal
crime to post such threats, on December 23, 2023, Hanson posted another
series of similar threats aimed at the President and Vice-President.

Each count of Threats Against the President and Successors to the
Presidency carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of
up to $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release. Each count
of Interstate Communication of Threats carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to three years of
supervised release.

A complaint is simply a method by which a person is charged with
criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is
presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes
guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The United States Secret Service is conducting the investigation in this
case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, is
handling the prosecution.

Some entity (presumably Mossad) must have put a back door, figuratively
speaking, in the pagers so that when it received a certain signal, it
either put the (presumed) lithium ion batteries in thermal runaway or
detonated an explosive substance surreptitiously placed in each pager.

They probably got a great deal on the pagers from Solly Goldstein. I
wonder how many of the injured people were Hezbollah and how many were
civilians who happened to buy a pager?

I saw quite few women and children on videos circulating online. According
to Israel, they were all Hezbollah fighters, of course.

Well said. The best way to stop being attacked by Israel is to stop attacking
Israel.

children. So at least 50% of victims definitely were not “terrorists”. You
