First, he talks about an attempt to suppress ticket sales at a reserved screening for a John Wayne movie.
Second, he talks about working with Wayne to avert an attempt by Stalin-backed Communists to take over the Screen Actors' Guild. This was about the late 1940s.
Likely Wayne movies that could have honked off the Soviets would include Big Jim McLain (Congressional Investigator busts Communists! 1952.) Jet Pilot (American Jet Pilot fakes a defection to the USSR, to try to sneak back with Soviet technology and, of course, Janet Leigh. 1957.) or The Green Berets (American Commandos help South Vietnamese soldiers, including George "Mr. Sulu" Takei, fight Communism. 1968.)
OK, let's face it, ANY John Wayne movie would probably honk the Soviets off. Especially after he made that one about busting Communists in 1952.
Anyway, here's a U.S. President in 1988 (He would have still been in office, he wouldn't have left office until January of 1989) talking about a couple of conspiracies involving Communists.
